Ordinary beings falsely conceive the five aggregates as self and belonging to self, wandering in saṃsāra. Because in the past they had planted the wholesome roots of the two vehicles, the Buddha adapted to their capacities and taught for them that the arising and ceasing of the five aggregates is originally without a personal self; he never originally said that the five aggregates are real dharmas. They themselves became ultimately attached, not comprehending that the five aggregates are originally empty, and therefore feared saṃsāra and falsely grasped nirvāṇa, violating the Mahāyāna teaching of equality—how could that have been the Tathāgata’s original intent in expounding the Dharma?
