This explains that persons whose roots of goodness are feeble and few, and whose afflictions are deep and thick, although encountering superior conditions, cannot generate the Mahāyāna mind. Roots of goodness inherently have the differences of the three vehicles and the One Vehicle, and afflictions also have the distinctions of within the realms and beyond the realms. Examining each root of goodness against each affliction through four alternatives: some have many roots of goodness and thin afflictions; some have many roots of goodness and thick afflictions; some have few roots of goodness and thin afflictions; and some have few roots of goodness and thick afflictions. The myriad differences and thousand distinctions cannot be generalized; all are subsumed under the indeterminate group.
