"Those practices of skillful means are briefly of four kinds: First, the fundamental skillful means of practice: contemplating that the intrinsic nature of all dharmas is unborn, separating from deluded views, and not abiding in birth and death; further contemplating that all dharmas are assembled through causes and conditions, karma and its fruits are not lost, giving rise to great compassion, cultivating all good practices, and gathering and transforming sentient beings, not abiding in nirvāṇa. Because tathatā is separated from the marks of birth-and-death and nirvāṇa, this practice accords with [tathatā] as its foundation; this is called the fundamental skillful means of practice."
