"What is cultivating the gate of giving? If one sees sentient beings coming to beg, one gives to them according to one's capacity using one's own material wealth, relinquishing one's own miserly attachment and causing them to rejoice. If one sees sentient beings pressed by danger and distress, one rescues and aids them by expedient means, causing them to be free from terror. If there are sentient beings who come seeking the Dharma, one explains it to them in accord with what is suitable, using what one understands oneself. When cultivating these three kinds of giving, one does not do so for fame, does not seek gain or offerings, nor does one greedily cling to worldly retributions; one merely is mindful of the benefit, peace, and joy of oneself and others, dedicating it toward anuttarā samyaksaṃbodhi."
