As for the two kinds of selflessness: first, the selflessness of persons; second, the selflessness of dharmas. The selflessness of persons is also called in the sūtras 'the selflessness of sentient beings', 'the emptiness of sentient beings', 'the selflessness of persons', 'the emptiness of persons', and 'the emptiness of a self'. Sentient beings are formed by a confluence of dharmas; hence they are called 'sentient beings'. Being exists merely conventionally, lacking its own intrinsic nature; therefore it is called 'the selflessness of sentient beings'. The nature and marks of sentient beings are entirely non-existent; this is spoken of as emptiness, while 'person' is named metaphorically through its function. 'Selfless' and 'empty' have the same meaning as explained before. Real intrinsic nature is called 'self'; there is no self within the aggregates, hence it is called 'emptiness of self'. The selflessness of dharmas is also called 'the emptiness of dharmas'. Intrinsic substance is called 'dharma'; when dharmas lack real intrinsic nature, it is called 'the selflessness of dharmas'. The nature and marks of all dharmas are entirely non-existent; this is called 'the emptiness of dharmas'. These two are thus both called 'emptiness' and equally designated 'selflessness'. If distinguished separately, emptiness and selflessness mutually manifest what is hidden and revealed. According to the Abhidharma, the aggregates not being the self is called 'selflessness'; the aggregates not belonging to the self is spoken of as 'emptiness'. In the Tattvasiddhi doctrine, the emptiness of sentient beings is called 'emptiness', while the emptiness of the substance of dharmas is called 'selflessness'. Hence that treatise states: 'Contemplating the emptiness of sentient beings is called the practice of emptiness. Contemplating the emptiness of dharmas is called the practice of selflessness.'
