Regarding dharmatā: setting aside verbal expressions to discuss the principle, the principle is of a single flavor. The principle of a single flavor is the essential nature of dharmas; hence it is called dharmatā. Therefore the treatise says: 'Synthesized into a single emptiness, it is called dharmatā.' Regarding bhūtakoṭi, the treatise itself explains: 'Tathatā and dharmatā are called reality, and the locus of realization is called the limit.' Regarding distinguishing them in terms of the existence and non-existence of the real nature, as stated in a sūtra: 'Within the tathāgatagarbha are fully possessed all the Buddha-dharmas exceeding the sands of the Ganges, neither detached nor separated, neither cut off nor different. These Buddha-dharmas are of one same substance and nature, mutually constituting one another, without a single dharma independently maintaining its own nature. Although there is not a single nature, there is no nature that is not present.' Not having a single nature is precisely the meaning of tathatā. Yet with no nature not present, that is precisely dharmatā. Regarding bhūtakoṭi, that tathatā and dharmatā are precisely its reality, and the locus of realization is called the limit. (This concludes the second portal.)
