1.21

言約法者，如彼《相續解脫經》說「三藏皆是如來本教」，於中隨法分為三種：若言聞法歸依三寶、修習諸行，如是之義，名修多羅。分別一切戒行輕重、持犯得失，如是之義，名曰毘尼。分別一切情理虛實、諸諦差別、因緣法相、五明處等無量義門，名阿毘曇（此二門竟）。

Regarding reference to dharmas: as the Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra says, "The three baskets are all the original teachings of the Tathāgata." Within them, they are divided into three according to dharmas: If one speaks of hearing the Dharma, taking refuge in the Three Jewels, and cultivating all practices, such meaning is called sūtra. Distinguishing the gravity and lightness, observing and transgressing, gain and loss of all moral practices—such meaning is called vinaya. Distinguishing all delusions and truths, unreality and reality, the differences among the truths, the characteristics of conditioned co-arising, the five fields of knowledge, and other boundless doctrinal approaches—this is called abhidharma.
