Seventh, regarding the meaning of broad and narrow: when the three piṭakas are compared with one another, broadness and narrowness are not distinguished. Now, taking the Sūtra Piṭaka among the three and comparing it with the sūtra category among the twelve [categories of scripture], their broadness and narrowness are distinguished. The sūtra category among the twelve divisions has three distinct senses: first, the general sūtra; second, the particular sūtra; third, the abridged sūtra, completely as explained earlier. Among these three kinds, the general sūtra is throughout broad, comprehensively containing the twelve and encompassing the three piṭakas. The abridged sūtra is next in breadth; it is commonly present in both the twelve divisions of scriptures and the three piṭakas. The particular sūtra, compared with the Sūtra Piṭaka among the three piṭakas, is mutually broad and narrow. The Sūtra Piṭaka among the three piṭakas fully subsumes all twelve, and therefore it is called broad; it does not subsume the Vinaya or Abhidharma Piṭakas, and therefore it is called narrow. The sūtra category among the twelve categories does not subsume the remaining eleven categories, and therefore it is called narrow; but it extends throughout the three piṭakas, and therefore it is called broad. Although it does not completely and entirely subsume the three piṭakas, it is commonly present in all three piṭakas. Indeed, because the distinctions of inclusion and non-inclusion are clearly divided, we now distinguish them using four propositions: First, that which is the Sūtra Piṭaka and may also be called the sūtra category, namely the sūtra category within the first piṭaka. Second, that which is the Sūtra Piṭaka but may not be called the sūtra category, namely the remaining eleven categories within the first piṭaka. Third, that which is not the Sūtra Piṭaka but may be called the sūtra category, namely the sūtra category within the Vinaya and Abhidharma. Fourth, that which is not the Sūtra Piṭaka and is also not the sūtra category, namely the remaining eleven categories within the Vinaya and Abhidharma. The meaning of the three piṭakas is thus briefly distinguished.
