Question: Dependent origination is a dharma of saṃsāra; how can it act as a cause for nirvāṇa? Explanation: Dependent origination is gathered and formed by the true and the deluded. Subsuming conditions under the deluded, it is what is made by the deluded mind, an unreal and deceptive non-dharma, and is not called Buddha-nature. Subsuming conditions under reality, it is entirely made by the true mind. Hence the *Daśabhūmika Sūtra* says: 'The twelve links of dependent origination are all made by the true mind.' Because they are made by the true, when one penetrates them and attains reality, it is then called nirvāṇa. Therefore it can serve as a cause, and because it is a cause it is called 'nature,' the meaning of which is as explained before.
