First is explaining the names. The three clusters of precepts are: the precept of restraint, the precept of collecting wholesome dharmas, and the precept of collecting sentient beings. The precept of restraint is also called the precept of abandonment, and also called the precept of correct reception. As for 'restraint' (lùyí, saṃvara), the rule that checks evil is called rule (lù, vinaya), and because practice accords with the rule and precepts, it is termed restraint (lùyí). Furthermore, internal harmonization is also called rule, while externally according with the true standard is termed demeanor (yí). Prevention and prohibition are called precepts. This restraint abandons faults such as killing, and is therefore called the precept of abandonment. It is precisely the practice of abandoning faults that is favored, and therefore it is also called the precept of correct reception. As for the precept of collecting wholesome dharmas, conforming with benefit is called wholesome; binding oneself by resolve to embrace the wholesome is therefore called collecting. Being free from the fault of not collecting is called the precept of collecting wholesome dharmas. As for the precept of collecting sentient beings, in treatises it is also called the precept of benefiting sentient beings. Manifold births and deaths are called sentient beings; binding oneself by resolve to collect and transform them is therefore called collecting; being free from the fault of not collecting is called the precept of collecting sentient beings. Benefiting beings with the path is why it is also called the precept of benefiting sentient beings. These three accumulate together, and are therefore called the three clusters. The names and meanings are as such.
