First, explaining the names. As for the 'three wisdoms', in the sūtras they are sometimes called hearing, reflection, and cultivation, and sometimes spoken of as the wisdoms of hearing, reflection, and cultivation. Broadly explained, they are one. Distinguishing them specifically, their meaning has broad and narrow senses. If one simply says 'hearing, reflection, and cultivation', the meaning is broad and pervades all practices: within this pervasion of all, initially receiving the practice-dharmas is broadly called hearing; discriminating and selecting among the dharmas heard is broadly called wisdom; correctly practicing in accordance with the Dharma is broadly called cultivation. If they are spoken of as the 'wisdoms of hearing, reflection, and cultivation', the meaning is narrow and restricted to prajñā, not pervasively applying to other practices. Within prajñā, receiving instruction is called hearing, and the understanding born thereof is called the wisdom of hearing; selecting the meaning is called reflection, and the understanding obtained from reflection is called the wisdom of reflection; progressing in practice is called cultivation, and the knowledge obtained from cultivation is called the wisdom of cultivation. The names and meanings are like this (this concludes the first portal).
