The three paths of distinct characteristics are drawn from the Daśabhūmika Sūtra and its Commentary. They may also be named the 'three paths of distinct stages'. What are their names? The first is seeing, the second is cultivation, and the third is effortless action. First, regarding 'seeing': when the mind of prajñā investigates and becomes clear, it is called 'seeing'; progressing and training is called 'cultivation'; when the cultivated mind has long been pure and spontaneously ascends, putting an end to objective involvements, it is called 'effortless action'. These three kinds differ across the grounds, so they are termed 'distinct'. The nature and condition of these distinct practices are designated as 'characteristics'. These three practices, being unobstructed and penetrating, are called 'paths'. Since these three have distinct stages, they are therefore also called the 'three paths of distinct stages'. The names are like this (this completes the first section).
