Next, the third section: clarifying how many Buddhas the four reliances have served. As the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] explains: A person of the first reliance has generated the [bodhi]citta in the presence of Buddhas [equal in number to the sands of] five Gaṅgā rivers, can uphold the prohibitive precepts, well understands the texts and meanings, can explain them for others, and does not slander the true Dharma in an evil age; hence they are worthy of being a reliance. A person of the second reliance has generated the [bodhi]citta in the presence of Buddhas [equal in number to the sands of] six Gaṅgā rivers, fully cultivates all goods, can uphold the true Dharma, well explains it for others, and does not slander the true Dharma in an evil age. A person of the third reliance has generated the [bodhi]citta in the presence of Buddhas [equal in number to the sands of] seven Gaṅgā rivers, has fully matured virtuous practices, can establish the true Dharma, broadly explains it for others, can travel back and forth throughout the ten directions to ferry across living beings, and does not slander the true Dharma in an evil age. A person of the fourth reliance has generated the [bodhi]citta in the presence of Buddhas [equal in number to the sands of] eight Gaṅgā rivers, has severed all afflictions, set down the heavy burden, attained their own benefit, and completed what was to be done; wishing to accomplish the Buddha way, they are immediately able to manifest its accomplishment, can manifest transformations in all ways according to what people desire, and, having attained unobstructed wisdom, broadly explains [the Dharma] for others. (This concludes the third section.)
