As for the difference in afflictions remedied: as the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] states, loving-kindness quells covetous desire; compassion halts anger—the sūtra also says 'compassion halts malicious thoughts'; sympathetic joy removes jealousy—the sūtra also says 'sympathetic joy removes joylessness', because on account of jealousy, seeing others obtain gain, one's mind feels no joy or pleasure, and therefore sympathetic joy remedies it; equanimity removes all greed, anger, delusion, and so forth. Question: Previously it was said that loving-kindness is of the nature of non-anger; why is it now said that loving-kindness quells covetous desire? The explanation states: There is no contradiction. If one covets the five desires, through begrudging material property one will become angry with sentient beings and be unable to give them bliss. By quelling greed, one is not angry toward others and is able to bestow bliss upon them. Therefore, although the mind of loving-kindness by nature is non-anger, it can quell covetous desire (this completes the fourth section).
