As for the difference in mutual assistance: the four practices mutually assist and accord with one another and are hard to dispense with; therefore, four kinds are established. How do they mutually assist? First, explain mutual assistance regarding loving-kindness and compassion. Loving-kindness desires to bestow bliss; without compassion eradicating suffering, bestowing bliss cannot succeed; due to compassion eradicating suffering, bestowing bliss then matures; therefore, compassion assists loving-kindness. Compassion desires to eradicate suffering; without loving-kindness bestowing bliss, suffering is never removed; due to loving-kindness bestowing bliss, suffering can then be departed from; therefore, loving-kindness assists compassion. Next, loving-kindness and compassion mutually assist together with sympathetic joy. Loving-kindness desires to bestow bliss and compassion desires to eradicate suffering; without sympathetic joy removing jealousy, bestowing and eradicating cannot succeed; due to sympathetic joy removing jealousy, bestowing and eradicating then mature; therefore, the mind of sympathetic joy is used to assist and accomplish loving-kindness and compassion. Sympathetic joy desires to celebrate beings; if there were no loving-kindness and compassion eradicating suffering and bestowing bliss, there would be nothing to celebrate; due to loving-kindness bestowing bliss and compassion eradicating beings' suffering, one then rejoices and celebrates in accord; therefore, loving-kindness and compassion are used to help accomplish the mind of sympathetic joy. Next, the first three mutually assist together with equanimity. Loving-kindness desires to bestow bliss, compassion desires to eradicate suffering, and sympathetic joy desires to celebrate beings; without the mind of equanimity discriminating between enemies and kin, one cannot universally benefit; due to equanimity removing obstructions, one is then able to bestow equally, eradicate together, and celebrate impartially; therefore, the mind of equanimity is used to assist and accomplish the first three. Equanimity desires to benefit equally; without the first three bestowing bliss, eradicating suffering, and celebrating beings with sympathetic joy, what would there be to equalize? Because of the first three, equality is spoken of in relation to them; therefore, one takes the first three to assist and accomplish the practice of equanimity. Furthermore, the first three are practices of existence, while equanimity is a practice of emptiness; without the equanimity of emptiness, existence becomes craving and views; therefore, the mind of equanimity is used to assist and accomplish the first three. If there were no practice of existence, emptiness would become drowning and sinking; therefore, the first three are used to assist the equanimity of emptiness. Because these four practices mutually assist and accord with one another, all must be established together; hence the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] states: 'Being companions and facing one another, they are therefore divided into four.' Their formulation is like this.
