First, explaining the names. The meaning of the seven grounds comes from the *Bodhisattvabhūmi-śāstra*. That which can produce is called a ground. The division and combination, expansion and concision of the positions of the grounds are difficult to fix. Now, relying on one teaching, we provisionally discuss seven kinds: first, the ground of lineage; second, the ground of practice based on understanding; third, the ground of pure mind; fourth, the ground of the traces of practice; fifth, the ground of certitude; sixth, the ground of certain practice; seventh, the ultimate ground. Regarding the ground of lineage: the lineage of habit and the lineage of nature are together called lineage; the root of practice is established, capable of producing causes and fruits, hence called seed (gotra); the meaning of seed is indestructible, and this is designated as nature (prakṛti). Distinguishing the ground by nature, it is called the ground of lineage. Regarding the ground of practice based on understanding: relying on the previous lineage, one arouses skillful means of cultivation to turn toward and enter the supramundane; because one practices with understanding regarding the supramundane path, it is called practice based on understanding. Distinguishing the ground by understanding, it is called the ground of practice based on understanding. Regarding the ground of pure mind: in the first ground, transcending the abodes of practice based on understanding, one enters the Joyous Ground; realizing the mind free from defilement, it is called pure mind. Furthermore, pure faith and aspiration toward bodhi is also called pure mind. Distinguishing the ground by this, it is called the ground of pure mind. Regarding the ground of the traces of practice: from the second ground and above up to the seventh ground, arousing the path of cultivation, it is called the traces of practice. Distinguishing the ground by practice, it is called the ground of the traces of practice. Regarding the ground of certitude: in the eighth ground, within the flow of the Dharma, definitely advancing toward unsurpassed bodhi, it is called the ground of certitude. Regarding certain practice: in the ninth ground, relying on the previous certitude, progressing higher and higher, it is called the ground of certain practice. Regarding the ultimate ground: namely, the tenth ground and the Tathāgata ground. In the tenth ground, causal practices are exhausted and fulfilled; in the Tathāgata ground, fruitional virtues are perfectly consummate; for this reason, both are called ultimate. This is merely discussing it according to one teaching; if entering other teachings, cause and fruit are distinct. The names and meanings are thus. (This completes the first gate.)
