Next, the ritual for receiving and observing the eight precepts is explained. One who wishes to receive the precepts should first arouse a mind of revulsion toward saṃsāra and an aspiration to seek nirvāṇa, and only then receive them, because what is received here are supramundane precepts. What is the method of reception? At dawn on one of the six fasting days, one proceeds to the place of the precept master, first bows to the Three Jewels, and next bows to the precept master. Long kneeling with palms joined before the precept master, one first repents of all transgressions, and then receives the precepts. The precept master instructs one to take the threefold refuge in the Three Jewels. After the threefold recitation of refuge is complete, he transmits the five precepts, identical to the śrāmaṇera precepts. Then, presenting the practices listed above, he asks if one is able [to observe them] or not, saying: 'First, non-killing of living beings is an upāsaka precept'—if a woman receives them, one should say 'an upāsikā precept'—'From now until tomorrow dawn, received for one day and night, as all Buddhas do, can you observe it?' The receiver should answer, 'I can.' Up to non-eating past noon, the questions and answers are likewise. A single repetition is sufficient; when finished, one bows and departs. The method of guarding and maintaining them is identical to monastic precepts. All adornments of the body should be removed, and men and women must not sleep in the same room. Such are the eight precepts.
