Next, discussing according to persons. 'Persons' refers to ordinary people, śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, bodhisattvas, and Tathāgatas. Ordinary people lack all five knowledges. Among pratyekabuddhas, there are only the knowledge of the stability of dharmas and the knowledge of nirvāṇa, and they lack the remaining three kinds; because the latter three knowledges are cultivated and aroused based on instruction, and when a pratyekabuddha appears in the world there is no instruction to rely upon, they therefore lack them. Śrāvakas, bodhisattvas, and Tathāgatas possess them equally. Among śrāvakas, all possess the stability of dharmas and nirvāṇa, while the latter three knowledges are possessed by arhats of superior and sharp faculties, and all the rest lack them, because these are superior and preeminent merits. Because those of sharp faculties attain the knowledge born of resolve, they can exercise divine transformations with sovereignty throughout the trichiliocosm, and can even know the minds of all sentient beings of the formless [realm]. (This concludes the fifth gate.)
