Next, explaining possession (samanvāgama). In accordance with wherever it is present, it is called possession. In the Abhidharma, the first two liberations, up to the second dhyāna and below, wherever one's body may be, are all possessed. When reborn above, they are not possessed, because when sāsrava [beings] are reborn above, they lose what is below. The third liberation, up to the fourth dhyāna and below, is possessed in all places; when reborn above, it is not possessed. The sāsrava liberations of the lower three formless bases are all possessed in their own stage and below; when reborn above, they are not possessed. The anāsrava liberations of those three formless bases, as well as the last two kinds, are possessed in all places. However, in that school, the first seven liberations may be entered in the present wherever they are possessed; the eighth liberation is possessed and can be entered in the desire and form realms, but in the formless realm, although possessed, it cannot be entered. There are no physical forms there, and if one were also to extinguish the mind, life would come to an end. In the Tattvasiddhi and the Mahāyāna, all liberations are possessed in all places.
