Regarding the nine successive meditative attainments: they are the so-called eight dhyānas and the attainment of cessation, as taught by Nāgārjuna. These nine only encompass the fundamental substance of meditative absorption and do not extend to expedients, because at the time of fundamental meditative absorption, one enters from one to the next in succession. The eight dhyānas and the attainment of cessation are broadly explained as above. However, these are also called the nine successive cessations. Entering the first dhyāna, one ceases the mind of the desire realm; entering the second dhyāna, one ceases the mind of the first dhyāna; and so on, until entering the attainment of cessation, one ceases the mind of neither-perception-nor-non-perception. Such are the names of the nine successive meditative attainments.
