Fourth, explaining their acquisition, discarding, and possession. First, explaining their acquisition: what was not previously possessed and is now achieved is termed "acquisition." What is acquired is not fixed: sometimes one is acquired, sometimes two, or sometimes six. Regarding acquiring one, there are nine occasions in all: among the sixteen minds of contemplating the truths, at each occasion when the sixth, eighth, tenth, twelfth, fourteenth, and sixteenth minds arise, one [cognition of] abandonment is acquired, which constitutes six occasions; when the fruit mind of a gradual anāgāmin manifests, one cognition of abandonment is acquired, making seven occasions including the previous ones; for one on the path toward arhatship whose craving for form is exhausted, one cognition of abandonment is acquired, making eight occasions including the previous ones; when the fruit of arhatship arises, one cognition of abandonment is acquired, making nine occasions including the previous ones. Regarding acquiring two, it refers to an arhat who regresses from [the abandonment of] the formless fetters, thereby acquiring the two cognitions of abandonment: that of the exhaustion of the lower fetters and that of the exhaustion of craving for form. Regarding acquiring six, when an anāgāmin or an arhat regresses and gives rise to defilements of the path of cultivation in the desire realm, they acquire the six kinds of cognition of abandonment within [the path of] seeing the truths (this finishes one gate).
