The meaning of the ten clarities is derived from the Avataṃsaka-sūtra. Knowing dharmas clearly and distinctly is therefore called 'clarity'. The meanings of clarity are diverse, but in one gate ten are expounded. What are the ten names? 1. The clarity of the knowledge of others' minds: knowing as it truly is the minds and mental factors of all sentient beings. 2. The clarity of the knowledge of the divine eye: all material forms are clear and unimpeded. 3. The clarity of the knowledge of past lives: knowing as it truly is the eight matters and six concurrent practices of oneself and others in past lives. 4. The clarity of the unimpeded knowledge entering into the future limit: knowing as it truly is the wandering in saṃsāra of all sentient beings in future lives, whether emerging or sinking. 5. The clarity of the knowledge of the divine ear: being sovereign at will with regard to all sounds in the worlds of the ten directions, whether heard or unheard. 6. The clarity of the knowledge of the fearless spiritual powers of abiding stably: being replete with immeasurable, inconceivable great supernatural powers, coming and going sovereignly and unimpededly in the worlds of the ten directions. 7. The clarity of the knowledge of distinguishing all sounds: knowing as it truly is the differences in speech of all sentient beings. 8. The clarity of the knowledge of generating immeasurable form bodies: being capable of manifesting transformations of various material forms. 9. The clarity of the knowledge of knowing the reality of all dharmas: knowing as it truly is with regard to all dharmas. 10. The clarity of the knowledge of entering the samādhi of cessation of all dharmas: entering into the quiescent absorption of all dharmas without abandoning any of one's practices. These ten are still subsumed under the six superknowledges: the first is the superknowledge of the knowledge of others' minds; the second and fourth are the superknowledge of the divine eye; the third is the superknowledge of the knowledge of past lives; the fifth and seventh are the superknowledge of the divine ear; the sixth and eighth are the superknowledge of bodily psychic power; the latter two are the superknowledge of the knowledge of the exhaustion of outflows. If the ninth is differentiated as the superknowledge of the knowledge of dharmas, then these ten are subsumed under seven superknowledges. The ten clarities are as such.
