Next, the stage is determined. Where does this stage lie? Someone explains: 'The bodhisattva's ten abodes are none other than the ten grounds, because the practices performed are the same as those of the ten grounds.' Question: 'If these are the ten grounds, why does the sūtra say that this bodhisattva lineage is profoundly deep and vast, equal to the dharmadhātu and empty space? The sūtra says "lineage", which clearly means they are not the ten grounds.' Now, to discuss it correctly, it lies in the lineage of habituation; because the lineage of habituation is truly the beginning of leaving retrogression behind, it is spoken of as the abodes. Question: 'If so, why are the practices performed the same as the ten grounds?' It is explained: 'The dharmas of the grounds are relied upon equally by both upper and lower [stages]. Relying on them to generate faith is spoken of as "Foremost of the Worthies"; relying on them to generate understanding is spoken of as the "ten abodes"; relying on them to initiate practice is spoken of as the "ten practices"; relying on them to initiate true, correct contemplation is spoken of as "understanding and practice"; relying on them to realize and attain is spoken of as the "ten grounds". Therefore, the *Daśabhūmika Sūtra* (*Dijing*) says: "For example, all writing, numbers, and calculations are subsumed under the initial primer, with the initial primer as the root. The ten grounds are like this: they are the root of all Buddhas, and practice is what is able to attain all Buddha-dharmas." Therefore, although what is learned is the dharmas of the grounds, the practice lies in the lineage of habituation' (this concludes the third gate).
