Next is clarifying the marks of the causes and conditions for initiating the teaching. They are distinguished in seven phrases: First, clarifying the time of the teaching: on the second seventh day after the Buddha attained awakening, he immediately proclaimed it. Second, clarifying the place of the teaching: in the jewel-store palace of the Sovereign King in the Heaven of Making Others' Emanations. Third, clarifying the speaker: it was proclaimed by the Bodhisattva Vajragarbha. Fourth, clarifying the interlocutor: namely, Vimukticandra. Fifth, clarifying the samādhi entered by the speaker: he entered the samādhi of the radiance of great prajñā, also called the samādhi of the radiance of the Mahāyāna. Sixth, clarifying those who granted empowerment: across worlds numbering as many as the dust motes of ten billion Buddha-lands in each of the ten directions, there were Buddhas numbering as many as the dust motes of ten billion Buddha-lands, all named Vajragarbha, who mutually empowered him. Seventh, clarifying the witnesses: across worlds numbering as many as the dust motes of ten billion Buddha-lands in each of the ten directions, there were bodhisattvas numbering as many as the dust motes of ten billion Buddha-lands, all named Vajragarbha, who gathered like clouds to bear witness. The marks of the ten bhūmis have thus been roughly distinguished.
