Next, their stages are determined by contrasting them with the five practices. The five practices are: first, the noble practice; second, the pure practice; third, the celestial practice; fourth, the disease practice; and fifth, the infant practice. This meaning has already been explained in detail in the previous chapter on the five practices. Broadly speaking, both the five practices and the ten virtues pervade throughout from beginning to end, because all bodhisattvas constantly cultivate them. Differentiated according to their distinct characteristics, the five practices pertain to before the bhūmis, and the ten virtues pertain to on the bhūmis. How is it known that the five practices pertain to before the bhūmis? As stated in the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra]: the Immovable Ground, the Forbearing, Fearless, and Exceedingly Loving Ground, and the Ground of Empty Equanimity on the first bhūmi and above are the fruits of the five practices. This clearly shows they are before the bhūmis. How is it known that the ten virtues pertain to on the bhūmis? As stated in the sūtra: the ten virtues of a bodhisattva are inconceivable, are not worldly dharmas, and do not exist in the world. This clearly shows they are not before the bhūmis. Such are the ten virtues.
