Next, the differences among the mental knowledges that are cultivated will be clarified. According to the Abhidharma, the ten knowledges, when analyzed separately, comprise two hundred and nine minds. The differences among the minds fall broadly into four categories: 1. Minds severing fetters. The unobstructed paths and paths of liberation of the path of seeing and path of cultivation together comprise one hundred and seventy-eight minds: severing the delusions of seeing the truths has sixteen minds (eight forbearances and eight knowledges); severing the delusions of the path of cultivation has one hundred and sixty-two minds. For severing the delusions of the desire realm up to [the stage of] neither-perception-nor-non-perception, across the nine stages each has nine grades of unobstructed paths and paths of liberation; combined with the aforementioned understanding of seeing, these total one hundred and seventy-eight minds. 2. Minds transforming the faculties comprise twenty. A trainee transforming the faculties has two minds, namely one unobstructed path and one path of liberation. An adept transforming the faculties has eighteen minds, namely nine unobstructed paths and nine paths of liberation. 3. Minds perfuming dhyāna comprise three kinds: first, one anāsrava mind; next, one sāsrava mind; and finally, one anāsrava mind—the former two being unobstructed, and the latter one being liberation. 4. Minds cultivating supernormal knowledges comprise eight, namely five unobstructed [paths] and three [paths of] liberation, excluding the actual substance of the supernormal knowledges of the divine eye and divine ear, since these two are indeterminate and therefore cultivation is not discussed with respect to them. These, when combined, are said to be two hundred and nine minds. The Tattvasiddhi and the Mahāyāna hold that defilements are severed by measureless minds, which cannot be fixed to a definite number (this completes the second gateway).
