15.47

次明遠離四種惡友。如彼經說，有四怨如親，應當覺知：一畏伏友，畏而伏從，實無誠心，此據其意。二美言友，言順心乖，此據其口。三敬順友，形詐親附，內無實心，此據其身。四者惡友，惡事相伴。畏伏有四：一先與後奪，畏時則與、不畏還奪；二與少望多，求取無厭；三畏故強親；四為求離苦詐親附。美言有四：一善惡斯從、二有難捨離、三外有善來蜜而止之、四見有危事便相誹謗。敬順有四：一者先誑、二者後誑、三者現誑、四見有小過便加杖之。惡友有四：一飲酒時為友、二博戲時為友、三婬逸時為友、四歌舞時為友。此皆須離（此二門竟）。

Next, the abandonment of the four kinds of bad friends is explained. As that sūtra states, there are four foes who resemble friends, and one should be aware of them: First, the friend of intimidation and submission, who submits out of fear and truly has no sincere mind—this is based on their intention. Second, the friend of sweet words, whose words comply while their mind opposes—this is based on their speech. Third, the friend of outward deference, who hypocritically shows closeness outwardly but has no sincere mind within—this is based on their bodily actions. Fourth, the evil companion, who accompanies one in bad deeds. The friend of intimidation and submission has four aspects: 1. First giving and later taking back, giving when afraid and taking back when not afraid; 2. Giving little and expecting much, grasping without satiety; 3. Forcing closeness only out of fear; 4. Hypocritically showing closeness in order to escape suffering. The friend of sweet words has four aspects: 1. Complying with both good and evil; 2. Abandoning one when difficulties arise; 3. Cloaking bad intentions in sweet talk to deter someone when a beneficial opportunity comes from outside; 4. Immediately slandering someone upon seeing them in peril. The friend of outward deference has four aspects: 1. Deceiving beforehand; 2. Deceiving afterward; 3. Deceiving in the present; 4. Immediately taking a cane to someone upon seeing a minor fault. The evil companion has four aspects: 1. Being a friend when drinking wine; 2. Being a friend when gambling; 3. Being a friend in licentiousness; 4. Being a friend during singing and dancing. All of these must be avoided. (This concludes the second section.)
