Next, the meaning of the differences between the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna is explained. The differences are six: First, the difference in the objectifying mind. In the Hīnayāna, one manifests through an object-grasping mind: whenever there is conjuring and manifesting, it arises through deliberate intention. In the Mahāyāna, one begins cultivating with deliberate intention, but ultimately achieves effortless action; without mental discrimination, the power of one's compassionate roots of goodness naturally causes sentient beings to perceive it. Second, the difference in quantity. A śrāvaka, with a single thought, produces a single manifestation and cannot produce an immeasurable number. A bodhisattva, with a single thought, can create all visible forms and all sounds throughout the dharmadhātu. Third, the difference in breadth. A śrāvaka can manifest in only a single world. A bodhisattva is not so, being able to manifest in all worlds. Fourth, the difference in reach. When a śrāvaka displays manifestations, it is within a single Buddha-land and does not reach other realms. A bodhisattva displays manifestations reaching immeasurable realms, just like Vimalakīrti dispatching a manifested bodhisattva to the realm of Sarvagandhasugandha and so forth. Fifth, the difference between having a mind and being mindless. Although śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas conjure human beings, there is no mind within them. When Buddhas and bodhisattvas create manifestations, they have minds. Therefore the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] says: 'They conjure immeasurable people, each endowed with a mind.' Truly, because the Buddha's mind pervades all places, the manifestations possess it. Sixth, the difference between unreal and real. Although śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas conjure things such as clothing, they cannot be used for actual function. The things conjured by the Buddhas and bodhisattvas can be used for actual function, as stated in the Bodhisattvabhūmi. Such is the mind of manifestation.
