Next, they are distinguished according to the three meanings of trainee and so forth. According to the Abhidharma, the first knowledges of the four truths, dharma-knowledge, and anvaya-knowledge—these six—extend to both trainees and non-trainees. The knowledges of exhaustion and non-arising are definitively non-trainee. Conventional knowledge is definitively neither trainee nor non-trainee: because it does not head toward the fruit, it is not called trainee; because it has not attained the fruit, it is not called non-trainee. The single knowledge of the minds of others completely encompasses all three meanings: the anāsrava ground-mind of an anāgāmin is described as trainee, because it is subsumed under the trainee's conventional view; the anāsrava in which a trainee roams and contemplates after the mind of unhindered liberation is called the trainee's conventional view; the anāsrava knowledge of others' minds of an arhat is called non-trainee, because it is subsumed under the non-trainee's conventional view; the anāsrava in which an arhat roams and contemplates after exhaustion and non-arising is called the non-trainee's conventional view; and sāsrava knowledge of others' minds is neither trainee nor non-trainee. In the Tattvasiddhi system, the initial four knowledges of the truths, dharma-knowledge, and anvaya-knowledge are described as trainee; the knowledges of exhaustion and non-arising are called non-trainee; and conventional knowledge and the knowledge of others' minds are called neither trainee nor non-trainee. If according to the Mahāyāna, the ten knowledges in the cause are universally called trainee, because bodhisattvas train in and study all knowledges; the ten knowledges in the fruit are named non-trainee, because they are fulfilled and perfected; and that which is neutral within conventional knowledge and the knowledge of others' minds is described as neither trainee nor non-trainee.
