Next, distinguishing in terms of a single person's cultivation and entry. When a practitioner is about to cultivate the noble path, he first hears and receives the true Dharma from a teacher; having heard the Dharma, he binds mindfulness to his mind, and therefore the applications of mindfulness are first explained. Wanting to seek real benefit in reliance on this Dharma, it cannot be obtained without exertion, and therefore the right exertions are explained second. Because of diligence, the mind abides in the Dharma, and therefore the bases of supernormal power are cultivated third. Because the mind abides, it is able to generate the supramundane path, and therefore the five faculties are explained fourth. When these faculties increase and grow, they can ward off afflictions and are called "powers," and therefore the five powers are explained fifth. Just as when a tree is small it can only have roots and cannot yet bear weight, but when it grows large its power can hold back water; faculties and powers are like this. When faculties and powers are complete and one wishes to enter the supramundane path, one first tempers one's mind with the seven factors of awakening. If the mind is agitated, one gathers it in with the three practices of pliancy, samādhi, and equanimity; if the mind is sunk, one must stimulate it with the three dharmas of investigation of dharmas, diligence, and joy; mindfulness tempers both; therefore the seven factors of awakening are explained sixth. Because the mind is tempered, one is able to enter the noble path, and therefore the eightfold noble [path] is explained seventh. Within this gate, the seven factors of awakening come before, and the eightfold noble [path] comes after. However, in this gate, both the paths of seeing and cultivation are collectively named the eightfold noble [path], not restricted to seeing. (This concludes the second gate.)
