The Sixteen Superb Excellences are distinguished through seven gates: (1. Explaining the names and discerning the characteristics; 2. Distinguishing them in relation to the four applications of mindfulness; 3. Differences in what is sought and accomplished; 4. Distinguishing them according to stages; 5. Distinguishing them according to dhyāna; 6. Distinguishing them according to persons; 7. Distinguishing them according to doctrinal principles).
