In the second section, the factors of the path are explained individually. First, the applications of mindfulness are explained. Truly, because the four applications of mindfulness destroy the four inversions and open the gate to the real mark, they are distinguished first. Furthermore, the factors of the path take prajñā as principal, and the applications of mindfulness are prajñā; therefore, they are distinguished first. Among them, they are briefly distinguished through seven sections: first, explaining the names and meanings; second, distinguishing the general and specific; third, clarifying differences among the three kinds of applications of mindfulness; fourth, distinguishing with respect to sāsrava and anāsrava; fifth, discussing sequence; sixth, revealing the characteristics of contemplation; seventh, explaining their texts. What are the names? Body, feeling, mind, and dharmas are the four. An accumulation of physical forms is named 'body'; receiving and experiencing is called 'feeling'; that which can condition is said to be 'mind'; its own essence is named 'dharmas'. Guarding the object is named 'mindfulness'; the places where the four kinds, such as the body, give rise to mindfulness are named 'applications of mindfulness'. (This concludes the first section.)
