Next is to distinguish the four right exertions. Distinguishing them into five sections: first, explaining their names; second, determining their essential nature; third, distinguishing their practices; fourth, discussing their order; fifth, elaborating their characteristics. What are their names? As for "right exertion", spurring oneself in cultivation without indolence is called "exertion"; an exerted mind that is not deviant is said to be "right". Question: Why do the applications of mindfulness, faculties, powers, and so forth not speak of "right", yet this one alone discusses it? Nāgārjuna explains: "When vigor is aroused, it easily enters into deviance; to guard against that fault, it specifically discusses 'right', because this right exertion is frequently stirred into motion." Like the various non-Buddhists who mostly spur themselves with exertion yet follow deviant inversions, reversing and leaving behind that fault is called "right" (this concludes the first section).
