16.52

次解五根。四門分別：一釋其名、二辨其相、三論次第、四約位分別。名字如何？所謂信根乃至慧根。於境決定，名之為信。練心於法，名之為精；精心務達，說以為進。守境名念。住緣曰定。觀達稱慧。此之五種，宿習今成，能生曰根。名字如是（此一門竟）。

Next, the five faculties (indriya) are explained. They are differentiated into four sections: first, explaining their names; second, distinguishing their characteristics; third, discussing their sequence; fourth, distinguishing them according to stages. What of their names? They are namely the faculty of faith and so forth up to the faculty of prajñā. Decisive certainty regarding an object is called "faith." Tempering the mind in the Dharma is called "vigor" (vīrya, "refinement"); diligently striving to attain it is termed "advancement." Guarding the object is called "mindfulness." Abiding upon the condition is called "samādhi." Discerning and penetrating is termed "prajñā." These five kinds, practiced in past lives and perfected in the present, are capable of generating [wholesome qualities] and are called "faculties" (indriya). Such are their names.
