Next, the seven factors of awakening (bodhyaṅga) are explained. They are differentiated into four sections: first, explaining their names; second, determining their essential constituents; third, dividing śamatha and vipaśyanā; fourth, clarifying their sequence. What of their names? In the sūtras they are called the seven limbs of awakening (sambodhyaṅga), and also called the branches of awakening. Anāsrava noble prajñā is called "awakening" (bodhi), and the distinctions within awakening such as mindfulness and the rest are called "limbs" (bhāga) or "branches" (aṅga). It may also be that the noble knowledge of the stage of no-more-learning is called awakening, and the seven kinds, mindfulness and the rest, are able to serve as its causes, so they are called "limbs" or "branches." Question: All the dharmas of the thirty-seven factors of awakening are limbs of awakening, and are equally branches of awakening; why are these seven specifically called branches of awakening? The cultivation of the path in the seven factors of awakening borders on the stage of no-more-learning; because this is close to the fruit, its aspect as cause is prominent, and therefore it is specifically designated as branches and limbs with respect to awakening. Such is the meaning of their names. (This concludes the first section.)
