Next, distinguishing its characteristics. These sakṛdāgāmins are differentiated into three: first, those who attain parinirvāṇa in the present life, cultivating and attaining the fruit of arhat in the present body and entering parinirvāṇa; second, those who advance in the present life, cultivating and attaining the fruit of anāgāmin in the present body and taking rebirth in the higher realms; third, those who transmigrate across rebirths, obtaining no distinct attainment in the present life and taking rebirth in the desire realm. If these three are divided, they can also be spoken of as five. Those who attain parinirvāṇa in the present life are of two kinds: first, directly attaining parinirvāṇa in the present life, cultivating and attaining sakṛdāgāmin upon an ordinary person's body and immediately attaining parinirvāṇa in that very body; second, transmigrating through rebirths, either transmigrating while grounded in the fruit of srotāpanna or transmigrating during the practice toward sakṛdāgāmin, regaining sakṛdāgāmin and immediately entering parinirvāṇa in that very body. Those who advance in the present life count as one, making three when combined with the previous. Among those who transmigrate across rebirths, there are two kinds: first, those who preserve the fruit, called "once-returners"; second, those who advance toward [the next fruit], called "one-seed" (ekabījin). This one-seed is also established through three causes and conditions: namely, severing afflictions, accomplishing untainted faculties that act as antidotes, and taking rebirth in a higher [realm]. If any one of the three is lacking, it is not a one-seed. The treatise explains it like this. Combining this with the previous, five are spoken of in total. Distinguishing the characteristics is thus concluded. (These two sections are concluded).
