Next, the pratyekabuddha is discussed. Within this there are three divisions: first, explaining the name and meaning; second, distinguishing them relative to the Hīnayāna; third, distinguishing them relative to the Mahāyāna. First, explaining the name and meaning. As for pratyekabuddha (literally "one enlightened through conditions"), the correct sound in the foreign language is pratyekabuddha; translated here, pratyeka means conditions, and buddha means awakened. There are two explanations of the name and meaning of pratyekabuddha: First, it is explained in terms of the Dharma gateway contemplated. "Conditions" refers to the twelve dharmas of conditioning, from ignorance down to old age and death; contemplating these, one awakens and understands, attaining awakening from conditions; hence one is named pratyekabuddha. Second, it is explained in terms of the conditions for attaining the path. As explained extensively in the Sūtra on the Causes and Conditions of Pratyekabuddhas Attaining the Path, just as Pukkasāti attained awakening through contemplating the wind moving a tree, such persons all rely on present phenomenal conditions to attain awakening; hence they are called "those enlightened through conditions." Such are the name and meaning (this finishes the first section).
