First, explaining the names. The mind of wisdom being without fear is called fearlessness. Fearlessnesses differ, being divided into four according to their meaning. What are the names? First, fearlessness of all-knowledge; second, fearlessness of exhaustion of taints; third, fearlessness in expounding the obstructions to the path; fourth, fearlessness in expounding the path to the exhaustion of suffering. Illuminating all phenomena universally is called all-knowledge. Taking one's own possession of knowledge as object, being without fear before others, is called the fearlessness of all-knowledge. Afflictions and ignorance having ended is designated the exhaustion of taints. Illuminating one's own possession of exhaustion, being without fear before others, is called the fearlessness of exhaustion of taints. Being capable of setting forth faults and obstructions is called being able to expound the obstructions to the path. Taking one's own capacity as object, being without fear before others, is called the fearlessness of liberation through expounding the path to the exhaustion of suffering. These latter two take one's own capacity as object and are fearless before others; they do not take the knowledge and severance of disciples as object. Such are the names and meanings. (This completes the first gate.)
