Regarding the meaning of reality: dharmas transcending emotional delusion are called "real." The deep reason for reality is designated as "meaning." The real meaning is open and pervasive, and there is no place where its principle is absent; distinguishing differences in accordance with dharmas is difficult to fix by calculation. Now, following a single expedient suitability, two are manifested and four are discussed. Regarding the two: first, the true dharmatā; second, the phenomenal dharmatā. Regarding the four: first, what is known by the worldly; second, what is known by trainees; third, dharmas within the range of pure wisdom free from the affliction-hindrance; fourth, dharmas within the range of pure wisdom free from the hindrance to knowables. Both this twofold and this fourfold are portals of meaning, established in accordance with dispositions, none of which fail to benefit beings. Now relying on the textual presentation: the preceding two kinds are distinguished based on dharmas; the subsequent four kinds are distinguished in accordance with dispositions. Within the preceding two, the true dharmatā is the ultimate truth, and the phenomenal dharmatā is the conventional truth. The principle of the ultimate truth is the substance and nature of dharmas, named the true dharmatā. The distinctions of the conventional truth are designated as phenomena, and the intrinsic entity of dharmas is named the phenomenal dharmatā. The meanings of the names are thus.
