Next, the sixth section differentiates them according to the three karmas: physical, verbal, and mental karma are the three karmas. In terms of their ultimate essential nature, the six superknowledges all take wisdom as their substance; since wisdom resides in the inner mind, they are all of the nature of mental karma. Discussing them according to their characteristics, they are subsumed under the three karmas, as explained in the Daśabhūmika-śāstra. The first, the bodily superknowledge, is purity of physical karma. The divine ear and [knowledge of] others' minds are purity of verbal karma. [Knowledge of] past lives and the divine eye are purity of mental karma. As for the single superknowledge of the destruction of outflows, that treatise does not analyze it. The single bodily superknowledge consists of transformations in physical form, and is therefore said to be purity of physical karma. The divine ear and [knowledge of] others' minds are relied upon to initiate speech, and are therefore said to be purity of verbal karma. How do they initiate speech? Because with the divine ear one listens to and receives the true Dharma from buddhas and bodhisattvas, and hears the various voices and sounds of sentient beings, relying on which one initiates speech; with the superknowledge of others' minds, one knows the minds and desires of beings, in accordance with which one initiates speech. Because these two superknowledges are powerful in initiating speech, the treatise explains them as purity of verbal karma. [Knowledge of] past lives and the divine eye fully know past and future affairs; because the past and future are separated by lifetimes and difficult to know, and cannot be comprehended except by mind, they are therefore said to be purity of mental karma. Regarding the superknowledge of the destruction of outflows, one's own realization of the destruction of outflows is inner freedom from defilement, which is also purity of mental karma. When it is called the destruction of outflows through knowing others' destruction of outflows, this is knowing whether the delusions in the minds of other sentient beings are exhausted or not exhausted, relying on which one initiates speech; this resembles the superknowledge of others' minds and is also purity of verbal karma. Such are the three karmas.
