The original text against which the above twenty-six scrolls were collated is an excellent copy collated from three ancient manuscripts. Formerly, in the second year of Enkyō [1745] at Kanki-an, the copy kept by Eyo Danhai of Zōjōji within the eastern capital was obtained, and the novice Gikyō was ordered to transcribe it. Recently, at the beginning of the Tenmei era [1781], Hōten of Myōzenji further compared the errors and collated the similarities and differences against the two manuscripts from Ninnaji and Tōdaiji; this was the copy held by Hōken. In the spring of the ding-si year, the ninth year of Kansei [1797], I (Kei) began to wield the brush; before finishing three scrolls, in response to requests from two or three disciples, I lectured on the Guan Wuliangshou Jing. When the introductory portion of the lecture was completed, I resumed my earlier writing. Again, in the sixth month of summer, I lectured on the Shōshinge at Sainenji in Shimōsa, and in autumn at my own quarters continued lecturing on the thirteen contemplations of meditative goodness. In the spring of the present wu-wu year [1798], I read the nine grades of non-meditative goodness in the morning, and in the evening lectured on the Jōdo Wasan and the "Chapter on Easy Practice" of the Vibhāṣā; because of this, I was unable to dedicate myself solely to collation. On the ninth day of the first ten days of the twelfth month of the same year, the labor of transcription was completed; I am ashamed that errors may exceed the "three pigs" clerical blunders. I hope that future readers will examine them carefully and correct them.
