Next, distinguishing similarities and differences according to the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna. The characteristics of similarity and difference are as explained in the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa*. As for what is similar, the names and meanings of the four conditions are the same as in the Abhidharma. As for what is different, within Hīnayāna dharmas one grasps at words according to appearances, whereas bodhisattvas thoroughly understand that they are like illusions and apparitions, like the moon in water; they simply lack a fixed intrinsic nature, yet are not without illusory appearances. Thus its text states: 'Like the moon in water, though it can be seen by the eye, it cannot be grasped by the hand. What the noble one refutes is the graspable moon, not the visible one.' The four conditions are also like this: they exist in appearance but are devoid of substance, and cannot be grasped as fixed; hence they differ from the two vehicles. The names and meanings of the four conditions are briefly distinguished as above.
