Next, the five fruits are distinguished with respect to the dharmas of abandoning. Dharmas are of three kinds: first, abandoned by seeing, which refers to the afflictions [abandoned by] seeing the truths; second, abandoned by cultivation, which refers to the afflictions of the path of cultivation as well as all tainted karmic fruits—the afflictions of the path of cultivation are abandoned directly in their substance, whereas the remaining karmic fruits are only abandoned in their fetters, not abandoned in their substance; third, unabandoned, which refers to untainted dharmas and karma. Karma abandoned by seeing, using dharmas abandoned by seeing, is considered to have three fruits, excluding the retribution fruit and the liberation fruit. Using dharmas abandoned by cultivation, it is considered to have four fruits, excluding the liberation fruit. Using unabandoned dharmas, it is considered to have one fruit, namely the predominant fruit. Because karma abandoned by seeing cannot obstruct conventional knowledge and the unconditioned state of severing defilements, there is the predominant fruit. Karma abandoned by cultivation, using dharmas abandoned by cultivation, is considered to have four fruits, excluding the liberation fruit. Using dharmas abandoned by seeing, it is considered to have two fruits, namely the efficacious fruit, because they arise in succession, and the predominant fruit, because it serves as the predominant condition giving rise to those dharmas. Using unabandoned dharmas, it is considered to have three fruits, namely the liberation fruit and the predominant fruit: because afflictions are extinguished relying on conventional dhyāna, the liberation fruit is obtained; because the untainted is aroused relying on conventional dhyāna, the efficacious fruit and the predominant fruit are obtained. Unabandoned karma, using unabandoned dharmas, is considered to have four fruits, excluding the retribution fruit. Using dharmas abandoned by seeing, it is considered to have one fruit, namely the predominant fruit; because this fruit is broadly pervasive, it can exist. Using dharmas abandoned by cultivation, it is considered to have two fruits, namely the efficacious fruit and the predominant fruit. Because a tainted mind arises after an untainted mind, arising through the immediate condition, there is the efficacious fruit. Because an untainted mental faculty gives rise to a tainted consciousness, initiated through the predominant condition, there is the predominant fruit. The meaning of the five fruits is briefly distinguished in this way.
