Next is clarifying the difference between initiating cultivation and not initiating cultivation. In this division, the mind of the six consciousnesses perceives, hears, senses, and cognizes good realms, directly initiating the cultivation of practice. The ālaya consciousness is that upon which cultivation depends, that which is perfumed by cultivation, and that which is transformed by cultivation; it does not initiate direct cultivation, because it is non-conceptual. The ādāna consciousness is that which is transformed by cultivation, being transformed away from grasping at self. It does not initiate direct cultivation, because it does not generate the thoughts of drawing near to spiritual friends, listening to the Dharma, and deliberating in cultivation.
