Next is distinguishing the faculties in terms of karmic retribution. The five faculties of the eye and so forth, and the two faculties of male and female, are purely retribution. The five faculties of faith and so forth, and the three untainted faculties, are purely non-retribution. The single mind faculty encompasses both retribution and non-retribution. Regarding the single life faculty, in the Abhidharma it is retribution, while in the Tattvasiddhi it is non-retribution. As for the five feeling faculties, in the Tattvasiddhi they are retribution, as that treatise says: 'Up to all feelings within the untainted are also all retribution.' According to the Abhidharma, excluding the grief faculty, the other four encompass both retribution and non-retribution: those co-arising with a retribution mind are explained as retribution, while those not co-arising with retribution are designated non-retribution. The single grief faculty is purely non-retribution. Why is this? The grief faculty arises from conceptual discrimination; therefore it is not retribution. Furthermore, the grief faculty is severed upon detachment from desire; retribution dharmas are not like this, and therefore it is not retribution.
