In the fifth section, differentiating according to persons. Among external worldlings, the absolute minimum possesses eight faculties: namely, all worldlings of the formless realm possess the life faculty, the mind faculty, the equanimity faculty, and the five faculties of faith and so forth. Furthermore, an icchantika born in the Avīci [hell] also possesses eight faculties: namely, the body, mind, and life faculties, and the five sensation faculties. The absolute maximum possesses nineteen faculties, excluding the three anāsrava [faculties]. Internal worldlings possess eighteen faculties, excluding the three anāsrava [faculties]; of the male and female faculties, they have one and lack the other, because those of dual gender cannot cultivate and arouse the seven expedients. In the path of seeing the truths, one possesses nineteen faculties, excluding the faculty of knowing and the faculty of one who has fully known; of the male and female faculties, one has one and lacks the other, because a person of dual gender cannot attain the noble [state]. Those of the two fruits of srotāpanna and sakṛdāgāmin possess nineteen faculties, excluding the faculty of what is not yet known and the faculty of one who has fully known, having one and lacking the other among the male and female faculties. An anāgāmin possesses eighteen faculties, excluding the faculty of what is not yet known and the faculty of one who has fully known, having one and lacking the other among the male and female faculties, and additionally excluding the grief faculty, because that grief faculty is strictly limited to the unwholesome grounds of the desire realm. An arhat also possesses eighteen, excluding the faculty of what is not yet known and the faculty of knowing, having one and lacking the other among the male and female faculties, and additionally excluding the grief faculty. Such are the distinctions among persons.
