In the fourth section, the three categories are correlated to distinguish their superiority and inferiority. Afflictions are of three types: upper, middle, and lower. The afflictions of the three pathways exist only in the upper grade and do not extend to the middle and lower. Hence the Saṃyuktābhidharmahṛdaya states: "Among them, the predominant ones are spoken of as karmic pathways." Furthermore, the Tattvasiddhi states: "Afflictions that give expression to volition must be predominant, and are therefore spoken of as wrong view." If discussing the three roots, they encompass both the middle and upper grades and do not extend to the lower grade, because minute and lower afflictions do not actuate karma. The three poisons are broader, subsuming all three grades. The doctrine of the three roots and so forth is briefly distinguished as above.
