The four bodily ties are as explained in the *Tattvasiddhi*. In the world, being bound and attached to one's own body and others' bodies without relinquishing them is called a "bodily tie." The ties are differentiated differently, being divided into four kinds: first, the bodily tie of covetousness and jealousy (abhidhyā-kāyagrantha); second, the bodily tie of ill will (vyāpāda-kāyagrantha); third, the bodily tie of clinging to precepts (śīlavrataparāmarśa-kāyagrantha); and fourth, the bodily tie of clinging [to views] (idaṃsatyābhiniveśa-kāyagrantha). These four are precisely greed, anger, and delusion: the first is greed, the second is anger, and the latter two are delusion. What are their characteristics? The *Tattvasiddhi* explains: "Generating a mind of greed and jealousy toward the wealth and property of others is called the tie of covetousness and jealousy. If others do not give, then producing anger and using swords, staves, and so forth is called the tie of ill will. These two are the roots of dispute among householders, and are also called according with the extreme of pleasure. If a person observes precepts and grasps them as the pure, untainted noble path, or observes the precepts of crows, fowl, deer, dogs, and so forth taking them to be true purity, this is called the tie of clinging to precepts. Then maintaining what is clung to as true while all else is false speech is called the tie of clinging to views. These two are the roots of dispute among renunciants, and are also called according with the extreme of pain." Among these four, the first two are dull proclivities, and the latter two are sharp. The four bodily ties are roughly distinguished as such.
