Next, the fourth section clarifies their sequence. As stated in the Tattvasiddhi, ordinary persons mostly give rise to greed and desire; hence greed is explained first. Because they are attached to desires, when transgressed by others they become enraged; hence ill will is explained next. The sūtra says: "From love arise ill will, jealousy, and so forth." Because this person is fatigued and disturbed by greed and ill will, they then wish to sleep; hence sleep is explained next. Having rested a little in sleep, greed and ill will arise again, perturbing their mind; hence restlessness is explained next. Due to restlessness and agitation, they do not obtain the previous benefits, and regarding the wholesome deeds they have cultivated, they then produce sorrow and regret; hence remorse is explained next. Because of restlessness and remorse, regarding the teachings of renunciation they are unable to have correct faith, and then think: "Is there liberation, or is there no liberation?"; hence doubt is explained next. The arising of defilements is not necessarily fixed; this is merely an exposition of the hindrances. Such is the sequence.
