Next, to differentiate the meaning of the identity or difference of the body and the spirit. Among these there are two: first, the body and the spirit are identical; second, the body and the spirit are different. Regarding 'identical': some people say that the body is itself the spirit. Why is this? Because when this body is analyzed, an additional, distinct spirit cannot be found. Furthermore, experiencing suffering and pleasure is entirely [the function of] this body; therefore it is known that the body is itself the spirit. Regarding 'different': some people say that the body and the spirit are different, for the characteristics of the body are coarse and apparent, whereas the spirit is subtle, imperceptible to the five sense faculties, and cannot be seen by ordinary persons with distracted minds, but can only be seen by those who maintain pure dhyāna-concentration; hence it is known that they are different. If they were not different, when the body died the spirit would perish along with it; because they are different, when the body perishes the spirit persists. The doctrine of the fourteen unanswerable questions is briefly summarized as such.
